Natural or Not?

Hey My Lovelies,

When I started my blog I wanted it to be an honest place to come and get inspiration and information, for me it’s not just about blogging about every skincare or makeup item I own, I only blog about products I like, use and would reccommend. I’m a firm believer in quality over quantity.

I feel that having learnt things over the years I would love to share them, this means sometimes speaking my mind and not following the blogosphere and blogging something because everyone else is…

Playing around on my snapchat earlier (please feel free to follow me on there link is down below) and expressing my views on whether skincare products are really natural or not despite the brands claims, it occurred to me that it would make a good post so here goes…

This is something I feel strongly about!

Now please don’t get me wrong I love using certain brands and products that contain chemicals and I’m not saying it is wrong to do so, this post is not meant to alarm you just to inform anyone who may not know the difference.

what I have an issue with is some brands or companies claiming that their products are natural when they aren’t completely, some brands (I will name no names!) use this as a selling point to draw consumers in making them think that it is possibly all natural and therefor better for them. Erm no.

This isn’t uncommon in the beauty industry these companies are not actually false advertising, they are just claiming they contain natural ingredients which can confuse people in thinking the product is all natural.

Having worked in the beauty industry for several years with both natural and non natural products I have learnt what to look out for if you are wanting a completely natural product and for those select few who may not know the difference this is what I am going to share with you.

Parabens & Chemicals

parabens are in simple terms preservatives, they are found in a lot of everyday products to prolong shelf life and prevent the growth of bacteria, these can be found in cosmetic products, pharmaceutical and food industries.

The most common parabens are methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben, you will most likely find these in the ingredients list on the back of your daily shampoo, cleansers or creams.

Without becoming to technical and scientific (because I could be here all day listing off ingredients and components to be aware of…) these compounds are avoidable in most products and some brands will state clearly on packaging that they do not use them at all, you will sometimes find that like organic food chemical free products can be slightly more expensive and have shorter shelf lives, but if this is what some people prefer that’s great as it’s each to their own and what they can afford!

I usually say most of the time if the ingredient is unpronounceable it’s usually man made and a chemical, so if you are looking for an all natural product please take some time to read the ingredients listed… Even though some companies claim the product to be natural it just might mean it contains certain natural oils and other extracts but have other chemicals in it to bind the ingredients together and increase shelf life.

Some of the companies that do great beauty products I’ve worked, sold and trained with and can personally recommend are;

  • Jason
  • Weleda
  • Organic Pharmacy
  • Avalon
  • Dr Bronner
  • Burts Bees
  • Trilogy

You can find these brands in stores like Holland and Barrett and other natural health stores like whole foods and online.

I hope you have found this post informative, please feel free to ask any questions!
